Troop 500 Adult Training

Welcome to the Troop 500 Adult Training page. Troop 500 encourages all parents to register with the BSA and recommends that all registered adults take at least the introductory online training offered by the BSA. All BSA registered volunteers are required to take the online Youth Protection Training (YPT) course within 30 days of registering and to renew their YPT training every two years.

The troop also strives to keep a complete record of the BSA training that all registered adults have received and to keep you notified of available adult training opportunities. If you have any questions or comments about adult training, would like to update your training record or notify the troop of your registration as a Merit Badge Counselor, please contact the Adult Training Chair, Andrew McCulloch or send e-mail to trainingchair@troop500.net.

On this page you will find answers to frequently asked questions on how to get trained and to report your training to the troop, on the minimum training requirements of adult leaders serving the troop in various capacities, as well as links to BSA training resources and the San Diego Imperial Council training calendar.

I am a newly registered adult. How do I get trained?

Register online at myscouting.org and enter your BSA member number in your profile. All BSA registered volunteers are required to take the online Youth Protection Training (YPT) course within 30 days of registering and to renew their YPT training every two years. The online course is informative and takes 25 minutes to complete. In addition, we recommend taking Fast Start: Boy Scouting and This Is Scouting. A variety of other helpful supplemental online training covering health, water and outdoor safety, and troop committee operations are also available at myscouting.org.

I am a parent but I have not registered. Can I take online training?

Yes. While we encourage all parents to register with the BSA, you do not have to be a registered adult volunteer to register at myscouting.org and take the online courses. It is highly recommended that all parents review the Youth Protection Training (YPT) course so that you will understand the youth safety procedures including two-deep leadership and no one-on-one contact that all adult leaders in the troop must adhere to.

How do I report my BSA adult training to the troop?

Log in as a Guest user on the Troop 500 Training Database to create an account that you can use to edit and update your training dates and merit badge counselor records. If you have trouble creating an account or already have one but have forgotten your password, send email to trainingchair@troop500.net.
